At Broughton Primary School, we believe that science enables our children to develop a strong sense of enquiry and curiousity which supports them in extending their knowledge and understanding of the world around them and promotes respect for the living/non-living.

Through our Broughton Primary School Science Curriculum, we aim to support our pupils in developing a natural curiosity and promote enthusiasm and enjoyment of scientific learning and discovery. We engage children through stimulating hands-on, minds-on learning to create a love of science and pave the way for future study. We explore the world around us through cross-curricular learning, create and answer questions as we deepen our understanding. We want our pupils to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding of the nature, processes and methods of Science through different types of enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them. Through our progressive, conceptual and enquiry-based framework, children will develop knowledge of scientists and take part in science events. Concepts taught should be reinforced by focusing on the key features of scientific enquiry, so that pupils learn to use a variety of approaches to answer relevant scientific questions. Alongside developing their scientific skills, pupils will develop a strong sense of how science shapes many everyday things and how Science and STEM will impact on their future.
Through the teaching of Science, we make the following direct links with the intentions set out in our Broughton Primary School Teaching and Learning Policy:
- Achieve deep understanding, by helping children connect new knowledge with existing knowledge so they are fluent and unconsciously competent at applying their knowledge as skills
- Build positive partnerships with parents, carers and the local and wider community
- Provide a broad and balanced curriculum which reflects our high expectations for all pupils and wherein pupils are the drivers of learning
- Lay firm foundations for life-long learning through our high-quality teaching and associated skills and attitudes to life-long learning initiative
- Foster independent thinkers who are aware of the life of our planet and their responsibility for its long term sustainability
- Provide opportunities for learning to be enhanced both indoors and outdoors as well as through meaningful and relevant application of STEM skills for the future
- Offer a range of opportunities for pupils to develop healthy bodies and minds; taking responsibility for their own wellbeing as well as that of others
- Demonstrate respect, tolerance and understanding whilst celebrating diversity
